What Is Low Pressure Die Casting?
Low pressure casting is the most suitable process for aluminum parts that are symmetric about the axis of rotation. For example, wheels are typically manufactured by low pressure die casting. In this method, the mold is placed vertically above the molten metal bath and connected by a riser. When the chamber is pressurized (typically between 20 and 100 kPa), the metal is pulled up into the mold. Eliminating the riser in this low-pressure aluminum casting process can increase the yield of the casting.
Aluminum is commonly used for die casting, but is prone to cracking or shrinking at high temperatures and therefore is usually alloyed with copper or silicon. Mixing aluminum with these metals can greatly increase the hardness and fluidity of aluminum. Due to the high dimensional stability of aluminum, aluminum can be used to make components that are thin and complex in shape. Aluminum is also beneficial in components facing thermal or electrical energy due to its corrosion resistance.
